3 Sqn is a RAuxAF Sqn within the Tactical Provost Wing (TPW), a formed unit of HQ P&SS. TPW is tasked with providing Line of Communication Policing (LoCP)support two two concurrent missions. LoCP is the kind of work normally associated with the Royal Military Police, and basically involves recce'ing, managing and patrolling Main Supply Routes from an Air or Sea Port of deployment to the front line. It includes managing Convoys, dealing with deserters, POWs and refugees- and of course good old fashioned discipline! TPW also has a remit to provide Air Transport Security, and Special Escorts.
3 Sqn was formed to provide support to the regular Sqns of TPW, aiming to supply a pool of trained RAFP personnel who can be deployed as individuals to augment Sections and Flights on deployed operations. The groundwork started in April 2000, but recruiting did not commence in earnest until last year. 3 Sqn now has over 100 applicants in various stages of process, and has already filled nearly half of its Auxiliary posts.
Amongst the recruits are a significant number of ex-RAFP personnel, as well as former RMP(TA), transferees from other RAuxAF Sqns, and a fair proportion of serving Civilian Police personnel. The recruiting base is any 18-50 year old men or women resident within 150 miles radius of RAF Henlow. Interest is also high amongst current serving RAFP who are approaching the end of their current terms of service.
The training involves a RAuxAF Basic Recruit Course of 2 weekends and 2 weeks (which can be waived where personnel have recently left the Service), and an 18 month trade and role training course held at RAF Henlow on the 2nd weekend of each month, and culminating in a two week exercise. After around 6 months, on completion of the basic trade element of the course, it is anticipated that trainees will become RAFP LAC Acting Corporals.
Attached are some pictures from the first Basic Recruit Course, held at RAF Brize Norton. These show some elements of the basic training, which although the equipment and uniform has changed, I am sure some RAFPA members will be able to empathise with!
Amongst the course are two former RAFP "Regulars"; AC Dave Middleton and AC Leon Allen. Also AC Mike Fleckney is worthy of mention, as he was awarded an admirable trophy for "Best Recruit" in spite of having no former military experience. Mikes' day job is as a Senior Officer with the London Fire Brigade.
The 3 Sqn recruits had better get used to wearing Combat clothing and living off rat packs, as the "battle field policing" role of TPW means that they won't be donning white caps and No.2 HSD very often.
