Warrant Officer Albert J Ballard (RAF Police (SI) between Feb 1935 and Jan 1972)
By July 1951 the RAF Police in the Canal Zone Egypt had successfully completed the grim task of searching for the body of an airman who had been murdered and buried out in the desert. The airman; Aircraftsman E F J Walker, a twenty-two year old driver from No 107MU RAF Kasareet, had disappeared after dropping off some locally employed Egyptian labourers tasked with spraying an area with insecticide to prevent the spread of malaria. When he failed to collect the labourers at the end of the day, the authorities became concerned and his details and a description of the vehicle he was driving were circulated to the various service police agencies operating in the region. As the investigation into his disappearance continued, evidence emerged which suggested that he and his vehicle had been abducted. The area in the desert where a witness had last seen a vehicle of the same description was searched by a RAF Police team, comprising Flight Lieutenant W H Gerrard, Flight Lieutenant J E Churcher, Warrant Officer A J Ballard and Sergeant E Dawson. After following vehicle tracks off the road for approximately two miles into the desert the team saw a human arm sticking out of the shallow grave where the body of the airman had been buried. A search of the surrounding area was carried out and a side hat and a pay book belonging to Leading Aircraftsman Walker were discovered. During a subsequent post-mortem it was established that he had been shot in the head and killed by a .38 bullet. His murderer; a Sudanese national, was later arrested in Khartoum by the RAF SIB, after being found in possession of a cigarette case and a tie pin belonging to Walker. The assassin was taken back to

the funeral will be Wednesday 10th June. Steve, I am e.mailing to personally thank you for the attendance and input of the RAF association at the funeral of ex- Squadron Leader Roger Deen (ex- RAF police) in Stowmarket & Bury St.Edmunds on Wed 10th June 09. I promised Roger before he died that I would ensure that he had a full uniformed funeral, which befits a man who served the crown in 2 services for nearly 40 years. The men from the RAF association presented themselves very professionally and their contribution gave a very good feel to the whole service(s). I am sure Roger would have been very pleased and proud by the contribution given those involved. Do you have the names of the 2 serving men who attended and their units so I can pass on my thanks to them via their superiors? Thanks again. I would like to offer my condolences to the family and many friends of Alfred Bernstone at this very sad time.
Alfred joined the RAF and was accepted for training to become a RAF Policeman in 1952, the year that I also took the same path, starting as he did, first as a National Serviceman and later on into regular service.
Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of actually meeting Alfred. However, I learned through correspondence with him, that we had known and served with mutual old comrades in the U.K. and Germany.
I always enjoyed reading Alfred's emails. He was a man with a wonderful and infectious sense of humour. He will be with us in memory always.
Rest in well-deserved

ALFRED BERNSTONE – (RAF POLICE 1952 – 1974) – MAY HE REST IN PEACE
On the 18th October 1952, Acting Corporal Alf Bernstone was posted onto the strength of No 5 RAF Police District, based at RAF Ruislip, where he was employed on No 138 Flight engaged on town and railway station patrols within the capital. Like so many others of his age, he had entered the RAF to complete his National Service on the 13th March 1952, and was sent to RAF Innsworth for initial training and trade selection. He had been fortunate in that he had been accepted into the trade of his first choice; namely the RAF Police and had decided to sign on to a regular engagement, mainly because of the low salary paid to National Servicemen. After completing his initial recruit training he had been sent to the RAF Police Depot at Netheravon where, during the twenty-two weeks that followed, he successfully completed his basic police course, his driver training and finally No 72 Provost Course. At Ruislip he was separated from his wife who was living in Exeter and because he worked during the weekend he had two days off during the middle of the week. On one occasion after being home to visit his wife he was returning to London by train and was dressed in civilian clothes. At Salisbury station the train stopped and a RAF corporal in uniform got into his carriage carrying a large suitcase. During the subsequent journey the two men began talking and in a short time the corporal revealed that he was a medical orderly from the Medical Headquarters in High Holborn who had just completed an audit of the medical supplies held at RAF Old Sarum. He went on to say that things had been in a right mess because there were no proper records being maintained. At that point, Alf suggested to his fellow traveller that no doubt there had been one or two fiddles taking place in such chaos. The corporal readily agreed and added that he too had taken advantage of the situation and indicated that his suitcase was loaded with medical items which the corporal added, “Would not be missed”. When Alf asked to see them, his fellow traveller was only too pleased to oblige. During the remainder of the journey into London the two men talked of various things and when the train finally arrived at Waterloo Station the corporal was most surprised when his fellow traveller Corporal revealed his true identity and arrested him for theft.
In 1988, almost thirty years after the British Motor Corporation rolled the first Mini off the production line on the 26th August 1959, its designer; Sir Alec Issigonis, who had first sketched the car’s simple lines on a restaurant table cloth, died at the age of 88. In three decades the charm of the Mini, which had initially sold for £500 in the UK, made it a favourite around the world and it quickly became something of an icon. In 1962 the MoD purchased the Mini and in the summer of the same year a fleet of ten new Mini’s had arrived in convoy at No 3 RAF Police District as replacements for the old Vanguards that had served the RAF Police well over the years. Sergeant Alf Bernstone recalled driving for many miles around the UK in the Mini’s which initially had no guard fitted beneath the engine compartment. Whilst travelling back to RAF Linton-on-Ouse one winter’s night during the great freeze of 1962/63, the vehicle suddenly stopped and flatly refused to restart. When Alf lifted up the bonnet to investigate what the problem was, he was surprised to find the engine compartment full of frozen slush. Fortunately, the vehicle had broken down near a guesthouse and so he retired for the night and the problem was rectified the following morning.
During Alf’s long RAF career he attained the rank of Flight Sergeant and successfully completed training to become a Special Investigator and a RAF Police instructor at the Depot. In addition, he successfully completed the Home Office Detective Training Course with the Lancashire Constabulary at Preston and was at one time the Curator of the RAF Police Museum. In addition to serving throughout the UK on station and regions, Alf also served overseas in Germany and Singapore. After retiring from the RAF in 1974, Alf joined the RAF Police Association and became a very active and enthusiastic member. A few years ago Alf contacted me and related his career story which I have included in my books covering the history of the Royal Air Force Police during its first 100 years.
May I offer my deepest condolences to Alf's wife and his family on this sad occasion.

Mick Cattigan died Monday 15 December 2003
Who the hell is CATTIGAN do I hear you say?
He was one half of the well known and loved CATTIGAN twins that served from the 50's making RAFP their careeer. The other half was John, died some years ago. The pair of them worked hard and played harder and became characters in the RAFP field. I had the honour to serve with them on 31 PD at Singapore. Both feature in Hennesey's History of the RAFP and to their credit when they were repatriated as the HMTS sailed past Tiger Beer Breweries the flags were lowered in their honour.
Both progressed to WO. John on demob worked for American Embassy and Mick at Plymouth Airport , both in the Security field.
So the end of another era in the hsitory of RAFP.

He lived with his wife Joan in Newark, Notts.
Following his RAF Police service Bill was with HM Customs & Excise for several years until his retirement.
Bill was a real character, a very well read Liverpudlian with a typical Scouser's sense of humour. He will be missed by all his friends and former colleagues.

Sadly I have just learned of the death of Gerald Frazer McMahon.DFM.RAF, an exceptional officer & a gentleman of the Provost Branch, with whom I was privilleged to serve under, in his capacity as Officer Commanding P&SS(FEAF) RAF Changi 1964-67. His death, recorded in the Daily Express Obituary column on 23rd February 2002,reports that he sadly died on 11th September 2001and he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He will be particulary remembered in our branch as being the officer who led the RAF police investigation into the successful arrest and conviction of a senior technicion for spying. I for one was very surprised to learn from his obituary notice that he also had a very distinguished war record. As a rear gunner in Stirlings & Lancasters, he was shot down no less than four occasions, once during the D-Day Landings, when he escaped and returned with 62 German prisoners. Picture and story
