Obituaries, Deaths and Funerals Page 1

I have been notified this morning that ex Warrant Officer Albert J (Bert) Ballard - RAFP 1935 - 1972 died  on 1st July.
His daughter tells me that Bert had been in poor health for some time
You may recall, from earlier emails, that it was Bert who, by donating old copies of the Provost Parades, completed the collection we hold in the Archives.
The funeral is on Friday 10 July at 1200 at Gloucester Crematorium followed by a reception at Hatton Court Hotel, near Painswick.
We would be very happy if any of Dad's old friends and colleagues could attend.
We have decided on family flowers only, but donations to the Alzheimers Society if desired.
Messages of condolence can be passed direct to his daughter on leigh@crayke31.freeserve.co.uk

RIP Bert.

So Sorry to hear the news that Bert has passed away. Although Bert retired 4 years before I joined the RAF, he was, while I was researching my first book 'Fiat Justitia - A History of the RAF Police', a great help in providing information and for proof-reading the book shortly before I sent it off to the publisher. The story below concerning Bert is taken from my book 'RAF Police Cape Town to Kabul'. Both Guida and I send our condolences to Bert's family and May he rest in Peace.

Warrant Officer Albert J Ballard   (RAF Police (SI) between Feb 1935 and Jan 1972)

By July 1951 the RAF Police in the Canal Zone Egypt had successfully completed the grim task of searching for the body of an airman who had been murdered and buried out in the desert. The airman; Aircraftsman E F J Walker, a twenty-two year old driver from No 107MU RAF Kasareet, had disappeared after dropping off some locally employed Egyptian labourers tasked with spraying an area with insecticide to prevent the spread of malaria. When he failed to collect the labourers at the end of the day, the authorities became concerned and his details and a description of the vehicle he was driving were circulated to the various service police agencies operating in the region. As the investigation into his disappearance continued, evidence emerged which suggested that he and his vehicle had been abducted. The area in the desert where a witness had last seen a vehicle of the same description was searched by a RAF Police team, comprising Flight Lieutenant W H Gerrard, Flight Lieutenant J E Churcher, Warrant Officer A J Ballard and Sergeant E Dawson. After following vehicle tracks off the road for approximately two miles into the desert the team saw a human arm sticking out of the shallow grave where the body of the airman had been buried. A search of the surrounding area was carried out and a side hat and a pay book belonging to Leading Aircraftsman Walker were discovered. During a subsequent post-mortem it was established that he had been shot in the head and killed by a .38 bullet. His murderer; a Sudanese national, was later arrested in Khartoum by the RAF SIB, after being found in possession of a cigarette case and a tie pin belonging to Walker. The assassin was taken back to Egypt and after being found guilty of the murder by an Egyptian court was sentenced to twenty-five years imprisonment. Leading Aircraftsman Walker was buried with full military honours in the military cemetery at Moascar.

Dear All,

Mike Olney-Smith reports the death yesterday (Sunday) of former RAF Police SNCO, George King.  George lived for a time in Spain but returned recently to Lincoln where he died after suffering from cancer for some time.

Personallly I remember George from him being the Corporal i/c the hut at the Depot at RAF Netheravon in late 1959.  Many is the time we basic RAFP were told in no uncertain terms, to get to bed, shut up and turn out the lights.  Then when we heard George snoring, we put some lights back on and carried on bulling our boots, brasses and blancoing our whites.

Happy Days (maybe?!?).

May George Rest in Peace.

Steve Davies

During the early part of 1946, Flight lieutenant William O'Neill was detached to the RAF SIB Headquarters at Buckeburg. Born in Scotland, he joined the RAF in 1942 wanting very much to become a pilot. After passing the appropriate tests and medical he was accepted and sent to Canada for training. However, because of what he described as a ‘slight misunderstanding’ with his instructor he was reassigned to train as a bomb-aimer and later completed the course. In 1944 he was commissioned and returned to Britain where he joined No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron who flew Lancaster bombers and were heavily engaged in missions over Germany. In June 1945, the squadron was disbanded and having little call for bomb-aimers, Flying Officer O'Neill attended a reselection board and elected to transfer to the RAF Police. After the war in Germany he found himself working with another Scotsman, Flight Lieutenant Alex Smart, a former RAF Police flight sergeant who had been commissioned earlier in the war. Some time later, Flight Lieutenant O'Neill became involved in the investigation of a stolen motor vehicle; a brand new Volkswagen Beetle that belonged to a young soldier attached to the Air Formation Signals Regiment in Buckeburg. The soldier had won the car in a raffle and was indeed very proud to have acquired his own transport but was greatly upset when it was stolen soon after. Flight Lieutenant O'Neill carried out exhaustive enquiries into the theft but failed to locate the car or indeed, whoever had stolen it. In due course the soldier was issued with a certificate to pass onto his insurance broker who later paid out appropriate compensation. As far as O'Neill was concerned that was the end of the matter, after all, there were many more investigations waiting to be tackled. It was several months later, when suddenly out of the blue one day he received information indicating that a Volkswagen Beetle was being concealed in a barn on a farm a few miles away in Rinteln. Acting on the tip-off, O’Neill and two RAF Police NCOs went to the farm and hidden under a pile of straw they discovered the car. The wheels and battery were missing and it was in a filthy condition, but otherwise it seemed alright. Further enquiries led them to arrest the farmer who later confessed to stealing it. Afterwards O’Neill notified the insurance company that the car had been found but for some reason they were not keen on recovering it; apparently that who cause major complications. Therefore O’Neill made them an offer for it and they accepted his price. A new battery and wheels were fitted and after a good clean out the car was roadworthy again. The new owner was as delighted with the car as its first owner had been but the story did not end there. Some weeks later O’Neill received a telephone call from the insurance company who stated that having reviewed the price he paid for the car they thought it was too low and therefore wanted to examine it later that day. O'Neill was not happy; he summoned his sergeant and told him to take the car away and make it look shabby. Although the sergeant was surprised, he complied with the order and after an hour or so returned the car in a very shabby condition. O’Neill sadly surveyed what had happened to his pride and joy and several hours later when no-one from the insurance company turned up he became worried; sniggers within the office increased and it quickly became apparent that Flight Lieutenant Smart had made the call as the insurance broker as a practical joke, which of course O’Neill took hook, line and sinker.

Roger Deen Provost Officer 1979 to 1990 and lately HM Prison Service died last night (31 May 2009) at approx 1800hrs.

the funeral will be Wednesday 10th June.

I would like to place on record my appreciation to the Norfolk Branch members who attended the funeral today. You did the Association proud. The weather was terrible (as was Stewart McArdle) but unlike normal QPD practice of finding a dry spot to shelter, everyone stood his ground. The RAFPA and RAFP contingent from RAF Honington were positioned in the senior post by the Church Door. It was a very moving service with a large number of Prison Service Officers of all ranks in attendance, in uniform. The Church was very nearly at full capacity. Again at the Crematorium RAFPA and RAFP were in the premier position on the route lining. Stewart and myself had the honour of removing the headdresses and floral tribute from the coffin prior to us folding the Union Flag on to which was placed his HMPS cap, which Flt Lt Cris Cross, representing the Provost Marshal, then presented to Mrs Deen. Well done Norfolk.  Steve Lamacraft

Steve, I am e.mailing to personally thank you for the attendance and input of the RAF association at the funeral of ex- Squadron Leader Roger Deen (ex- RAF police) in Stowmarket & Bury St.Edmunds on Wed 10th June 09.

I promised Roger before he died that I would ensure that he had a full uniformed funeral, which befits a man who served the crown in 2 services for nearly 40 years.

The men from the RAF association presented themselves very professionally and their contribution gave a very good feel to the whole service(s).

I am sure Roger would have been very pleased and proud by the contribution given those involved.

Do you have the names of the 2 serving men who attended and their units so I can pass on my thanks to them via their superiors?

Thanks again.

I would like to offer my condolences to the family and many friends of Alfred Bernstone at this very sad time.
Alfred joined the RAF and was accepted for training to become a RAF Policeman in 1952, the year that I also took the same path, starting as he did, first as a National Serviceman and later on into regular service.
Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of actually meeting Alfred. However, I learned through correspondence with him, that we had known and served with mutual old comrades in the U.K. and Germany.
I always enjoyed reading Alfred's emails. He was a man with a wonderful and infectious sense of humour. He will be with us in memory always.
Rest in well-deserved Peace Alfred.

ALFRED BERNSTONE – (RAF POLICE 1952 – 1974) – MAY HE REST IN PEACE

On the 18th October 1952, Acting Corporal Alf Bernstone was posted onto the strength of No 5 RAF Police District, based at RAF Ruislip, where he was employed on No 138 Flight engaged on town and railway station patrols within the capital. Like so many others of his age, he had entered the RAF to complete his National Service on the 13th March 1952, and was sent to RAF Innsworth for initial training and trade selection. He had been fortunate in that he had been accepted into the trade of his first choice; namely the RAF Police and had decided to sign on to a regular engagement, mainly because of the low salary paid to National Servicemen. After completing his initial recruit training he had been sent to the RAF Police Depot at Netheravon where, during the twenty-two weeks that followed, he successfully completed his basic police course, his driver training and finally No 72 Provost Course. At Ruislip he was separated from his wife who was living in Exeter and because he worked during the weekend he had two days off during the middle of the week. On one occasion after being home to visit his wife he was returning to London by train and was dressed in civilian clothes. At Salisbury station the train stopped and a RAF corporal in uniform got into his carriage carrying a large suitcase. During the subsequent journey the two men began talking and in a short time the corporal revealed that he was a medical orderly from the Medical Headquarters in High Holborn who had just completed an audit of the medical supplies held at RAF Old Sarum. He went on to say that things had been in a right mess because there were no proper records being maintained. At that point, Alf suggested to his fellow traveller that no doubt there had been one or two fiddles taking place in such chaos. The corporal readily agreed and added that he too had taken advantage of the situation and indicated that his suitcase was loaded with medical items which the corporal added, “Would not be missed”. When Alf asked to see them, his fellow traveller was only too pleased to oblige. During the remainder of the journey into London the two men talked of various things and when the train finally arrived at Waterloo Station the corporal was most surprised when his fellow traveller Corporal revealed his true identity and arrested him for theft.

In 1988, almost thirty years after the British Motor Corporation rolled the first Mini off the production line on the 26th August 1959, its designer; Sir Alec Issigonis, who had first sketched the car’s simple lines on a restaurant table cloth, died at the age of 88. In three decades the charm of the Mini, which had initially sold for £500 in the UK, made it a favourite around the world and it quickly became something of an icon. In 1962 the MoD purchased the Mini and in the summer of the same year a fleet of ten new Mini’s had arrived in convoy at No 3 RAF Police District as replacements for the old Vanguards that had served the RAF Police well over the years. Sergeant Alf Bernstone recalled driving for many miles around the UK in the Mini’s which initially had no guard fitted beneath the engine compartment. Whilst travelling back to RAF Linton-on-Ouse one winter’s night during the great freeze of 1962/63, the vehicle suddenly stopped and flatly refused to restart. When Alf lifted up the bonnet to investigate what the problem was, he was surprised to find the engine compartment full of frozen slush. Fortunately, the vehicle had broken down near a guesthouse and so he retired for the night and the problem was rectified the following morning.

During Alf’s long RAF career he attained the rank of Flight Sergeant and successfully completed training to become a Special Investigator and a RAF Police instructor at the Depot. In addition, he successfully completed the Home Office Detective Training Course with the Lancashire Constabulary at Preston and was at one time the Curator of the RAF Police Museum. In addition to serving throughout the UK on station and regions, Alf also served overseas in Germany and Singapore. After retiring from the RAF in 1974, Alf joined the RAF Police Association and became a very active and enthusiastic member. A few years ago Alf contacted me and related his career story which I have included in my books covering the history of the Royal Air Force Police during its first 100 years.

May I offer my deepest condolences to Alf's wife and his family on this sad occasion.
Stephen R Davies

Dear All,

Mike Claxton reports the death last week of Bob Farebrother, the senior member of the West Anglian Branch.  Bob’s funeral will be on Tuesday, 6th  Jan at 1000hrs at Bedford Crematorium
May Bob Rest in Peace.

John Walton

So sorry to hear that Bob Farebrother has passed on. His exploits during and after D-Day and his photo on his Harley-Davidson (RAFP) motorcycle are recorded in 'RAF Police Operations in Europe'. My condolences go out to his family and may Bob rest in Peace.

Steve Davies

Today Tuesday 6th January, the RAFPA West Anglia Branch said farewell
to our senior colleague William (Bob) Farebrother at the Bedford
Crematorium. His family and friends expressed their gratitude for the
contact and support provided by the Branch during his latter years when
he was house bound due to serious ill health, and for the small but
poignant honour guard provided for his last journey. A true veteran of
the war years and we shall remember him. Rest in peace. (Tony T
Secretary).

Dear All,

Member John Bartlett reports the death yesterday (19 December) of retired WO Alan Lindsey.  Alan had battled with cancer for a long time.

Alan was not a member of the Association but some of us remember him from The Queen's Flight and RAF Rudloe Manor.  Funeral details are not yet known, but John will let us know asap he hears.  Alan has lived in Trowbridge, Wilts, since he retired.

May Alan rest in peace.

John Walton
Alan was at one time a member of the RAFPA, but probably lapsed when he became ill. I served with him in Colombo, 61 Flight, RAF Colpetty, 1951-52, when we were corporals. What a guy! I could tell many a story about Alan and me, but I suppose the best  is a quote from our DAPM, who shall be nameless lest he is still around, who described us as 'Individually, two first class chaps, but when they get together there's s**t and hell to play.' Alan was de-mobbed but we met up later in Singapore in 1954 after he rejoined the RAFP.  I recall he was on Anti-Vice as it was in those days. Wonderful memories of a truly great service mate.

Sleep well my friend.

Ray Hensby.
Alan Lindsey's funeral service is at the Semington crematorium at 10,45 on 31st Dec,followed by drinks& nibbles in the Mash Tun pub at North Bradley. The family would be happy to see anyone from the RAFPA who would like to attend.
Regards
John
I also remember Alan he was a good old boy and very likeable- Fred Webster

Photographs of Ede Bray's Funeral

I have just learned of the death of Edith Bray.   Apparently she died in her armchair whilst watching TV on Thursday evening.   She was found by a neighbour, who called me after finding my name in her address book and recalled her talking about me.  There is to be a Post Mortem.

Ede served in the RAFP from 1951 until 1966 and will be fondly remembered by her contemporaries.

Her funeral is to be held at the Methodist Chapel, Scopwick at 10.00hrs on 24th December followed by cremation at the Lincoln Crematorium at 11.00hrs.

Ede had absolutely no family, so there is no-one to send condolences to.  Her friends, of which she had many, are scattered around the UK owing to her long service in the RAF

No flowers please, but donations to the Methodist Chapel, Scopwick.

May she rest in peace.

Brian Burrows

Edie Bray must have served after 1966 Brian, she was at 3 District, Spiitalgate, in 67/68 when I was there, nevertheless, sad news, may she rest in peace.
Frank Authers.
I'm not sure of the dates, but sometime in the late 60's Edie remustered to Clerk   I think she was at the RAF Hospital, Nocton Hall when she finally retired from the RAF  in the mid-70's.   She was later a civilian clerk at RAF Digby
Regards
Brian
Eddie was a lovely sincere person whom I have had contact with since working with her at RAF Coningsby in 1977, May she rest in peace .From Mary and Allen

Very sad news,Edith used to attend our meeting with Jill Cleugh many years ago.

Bernard

I only met Edie after she had left the service, I know she was a popular and respected lady both in and out of the service.

Although there are sadly no relatives on behalf of all members of the Association, I send sincere condolences to Edie's friends.

May Edie Rest in Peace.

John Walton

What a shock,we served together for a short time at Spitalgate  and we met up at one or two reunions in company with Jill Cleugh;a great girl.
R.I.P Edie you have gone, but will  not be  forgotten by your old mates.

"Spike"

It was Edie who introduced me to LACW Janet Purdie at RAF Debden in 1961. Jan became my wife in December 1962. I was stationed with Edie at RAF Nicosia 1958 -1961 where she liked to 'mother' we young sprogs. Jan and I will always remember Edie with genuine affection.

It is reported in the Exeter Express & Echo newspaper that member Clive Hender died on 27 November 2008.  His funeral will take place at 14.00 on Friday 12 December 2008, at Weston Crematorium, Weston-Super-Mare.  The Funreal Director is a firm called Elms, and other than family flowers, donations if desired, should be for the RAF Police Association.  Elms of 50 Baker Street, WSM is on 01934 616006.

Further sad news is reported by David Wardell about member Maurice Preece, who died in September 2008.  No further details are known.

May Clive and Maurice Rest in Peace.

Sad to report the death on 21 November 2008 of ex Sgt Ron Arlette who left the RAF in 1976.  His funeral is to take place at 1530 hours on Thursday, 3 December 2008 at Chichester Crematorium.  Ron’s Swiss wife Pat sadly passed away in March 2006 and he leaves his only daughter Julie.

Anyone who served at Pergamos, Cyprus 63 to 66, will of known Ron. He was a super chap. I did not know his wife had died which is very sad because she was a lovely lady as well. I think the only way I can describe him is that he was the Dixon of Dock Green RAF Police type of copper. I was not on his shift but was always on the one that relieved him.

One night we took over from him and as we approached the Guardroom a shot rang out. We went straight in to see what was going on and as the shift going off was  disarming someone got the routine wrong. We the night shift stood there and Ron said , " christ that was a close shave". The round had gone round the wall and then through the key case and stopped. A crisis developed immiediatly afterwards because unknown to anyone including Ron the round have gone through his calf muscle. He spent the next five days in BMH Larnaca. One of his best friends was a John Field, not the dog handler, and also Mick Lindow.  RIP Ron.

It is with great sadness that I have to report that at 21.00 this evening

David A Moore (Dave) passed away after a long and determined battle against cancer.

Dave served from 1959 to 1981.

He had been a member of the East Midlands Branch since 2000 and was one of our three Trustees.

Our thoughts go out to his wife Margaret (Mo), his two sons and grandchildren at this sad time.

The funeral of Dave will take place at 12.40 on Wednesday 10th. December at the Nottingham Wilford Hill Crematorium,

The family has requested that no flowers be donated.

Anyone wishing to make a donation should submit it to,

Pancreatic Cancer Research, Nottingham City Hospital, Nottingham, NG5 1PB.

Royal Air Force Police Association standard and members will be in attendance.

All are welcome at the Royal British Legion, Radcliffe in Trent after the service.

R.I.P.Dave.

Dear Association members,
Instead of members asking me to pass on their condolences why not write
direct to Mo.
Her address at Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire, is in the members directory.
I know she would treasure any correspondence and it would be a permanent
record of your respect.
Thank you in anticipation

John Curtis

Dave Moore was a very keen and active member of the Association and especially of the East Midlands Branch.   He was always keen to support  Association functions anywhere in the country and I don't think he ever missed a National AGM.

He was also one of the most helpful persons I have ever known.   Anyone who knew him will tell of his help building patios, laying decking, painting and decorating, moving furniture and generally running around for those less able than himself.

He will be sadly missed and the Association will be the poorer for his loss.

Philip Haigh was long associated with the RAF Police Dogs and was NCO i/c the Dog Section at RAF Honington in 1965, when for the 3rd year running the section produced the UK Champion.

Phil marched with the Association Contingent the first time we marched on the Cenotaph Parade in 2003.  He was quite a character and never afraid to speak his mind.

May Phil Rest in Peace.

I sadly have to report that Warrant Officer Ken Broddle MVO (Ret'd)  passed away on 7th November 2008 at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital following a short illness. He was 77 years old.
Ken served in the RAF Police for 36 years. His last tour of duty was as WO i/c RAF Police at The Queens Flight. He was a tall impressive man with many outstanding attributes. His work on The Queens Flight was rewarded by a private audience with HM The Queen at Buckingham Palace following his last Royal Flight. The only person on the flight to attain that distinction. He retired from the RAF in 1985.

He leaves his wife Diana, his daughters Tracy and Lynne and his grandchildren.

A superb man who will be sadly missed by all.  I worked with him closely when I was at 38 Group.

Ken Broddle's funeral will be at Poole Crematorium (Dorset) on Tuesday 18th November 2008 at 2 pm. Family flowers only. To allow for numbers Di Broddle has asked to be advised of those wishing to attend. Probably best at this time for those ex RAF Police colleagues wishing to attend to pass their names onto John Buck at amj@waitrose.com or {telephone number from Webmaster}

Nice to see that "Fizz" was so much respected by many people and congratulations are well in order for the effort put in by members who attended, in particular the North Yorks Branch.

I went to Mary Grimshaw's funeral in Doncaster last Monday 4 August. I know that many of us have many memories of Tom Grimshaw her late husband.

My own particular memories of Mary was her "mothering" of many of us young Corporals on 24 PD in Cyprus, in particular if we had to visit their AMQ to pass on a message to the Flight Sergeant Mary would always ask us if we would like a cup of tea. Unbeknown to her Tom would be standing behind her glowering and shaking his head as if to say, "Don't you dare say 'Yes' ". She never had chance to make that cup of tea as we politely declined her offer!!!

The actual funeral was very well attended, Gp Capt Bill Hickey RAF (Ret'd) and his wife Bunty were there, as was Gerry Towner with his wife Hazel, both ex RAF Police, I gave the latter pair enrolment forms for the RAFPA (Bill seemed disinterested). There were many relatives and friends there and it was very impressive to see and hear the Lesson from Ecclesiastes Chap 12 V 1 - 7 recited in full by a Lady Freemason.

Jane, Mary's daughter sends her best wishes and thanks for the many cards and kind thoughts from members of the RAFPA.

Mary Grimshaw was a much-loved lady and all who met her are unlikely to forget her many personal kindnesses.

Regards..... Brian

May Mary rest in peace.

I have received in the post a copy of the death certificate of William Louis Joseph Corrigan, otherwise known as Bill Corrigan.  The date of Bill's death is shown as 20 June 2008, in Southmead Hospital, Bristol.  He was born on 7 May 1920 and so had just reached the great age of 88!

Our register of members shows Bill was married to Jean and they lived in Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol.  Also shown is that Bill served from 1940-1965 and retired as a Flt Lt.

I will write to the family.

May Bill rest in peace.

I am very sad to report the death early this morning of retired Air Commodore AEG (Fizz) Hales.  Fizz was Provost Marshal, Chief of Air Force Police, Director of RAF Security and first President of the present RAF Police Association, from 1984-1986.

Fizz did not hesitate to volunteer to lead the Association on the annual Remembrance Sunday march at the Cenotaph.  He did so for 5 successive years and was looking forward to this his final year the day after which he would have been 75.

Again he was very proud to lead us at the National Memorial Arboretum for the Dedicaton of the RAF Police Memorial.

No funeral details yet, but I will let you know asap I know.

May Fizz rest in peace.

The funeral of the late Fizz Hales will take place next Friday 11 July 2008, at 14.00, at Copgrove Church.  Mrs Hales advises Copgrove is a small hamlet north of Harrogate and Knaresborough.  The Church holds about 50 and she is expecting about 40 family and friends.

While the church at Copgrove only holds about 50 people, Mrs Hales is trying to arrang a sort of marquee (with sound system), outside the church.  She is very pleased to know some Association members will attend and she very much appreciates all the messages, both written and on the phone, she has received.

I have just received the following message from Mrs Eileen Hales:

Air Comodore Fizz Hales
1933 - 2008

Eileen, Philip and Elizabeth Hales would like to thank all members of the RAF Police who sent messages of sympathy, or attended the funeral of their beloved husband and father.  The kindness of so many people was overwhelming and they especially thank members of the North Yorkshire Branch of the RAF Police Association for their attendance and bearing of the Standard.  The family are pleased and proud that Fizz deserved such tributes.  It was a moving and memorable occasion.

I understand Peter Kaye's funeral will be held at 11.00.hrs Friday 11th July, at the Parndon Wood Cemetery, Harlow, Essex.

Peter's daughter Vivian will dearly welcome any RAF Police Asso members who are able to attend.

Regret to inform one and all the Sgt Jack Lane (W4065742) RAF Police, passed away in the early hours of Wedneday morning 11 Jun 08 after a short illness and had spent the past 3-4 weeks in hospital. Jack, who lived 2 doors away from me in Cirencester managed to celebrate his Golden Wedding anniversay with his wife Vera, family, friends and neighbours last year.  We often spoke of people that we knew in the Job and places that we had been. It is suprising what a small world it is. Jack, like a lot of us, was very proud and honoured to have served in the RAF Police, which was obvious by our talks together.

Jack joined  in Apr 51 and left in Jul 75. In that time , he served from Netheravon, Gib, Brampton, Scampton, Bruggen, Driffield, Wittering, Changi, Cottesmore, Aldergrove, Cyprus (HQP&SS NEAF) and lastly at RAF Lyneham.

Jack 's funeral will take place at Cheltenham Crematorium on Friday 20 Jun at 1430 hrs. The family already have an RAF Ensign and a white hat for the coffin. Having spoken to the family, if any of Jack's friends are able to attend to give him a good send-off, they would be most welcome by Vera, Irene and the family. I will be attending myself. Should anyone wish to send letters of condolence to Vera and the family they can send an e-mail to me and I will gladly pass them on. As Jack would say, Fiat Justatia.

Having just received my latest copy of the 'Old Ceylon Times' from Ken Needham, I have discovered that RAFPA member Mr Ernest 'Fred' Liquorish (of 8 Bute Close, Hinckley, Leicestershire  LE10 0SJ) passed away in December 2007 at the age of 80 years. I have asked Ken to supply the contact details of Fred's NOK so that I can write to them. As you may know from the Griff, Fred contacted me in May 2003 and asked if I could put him in touch with his old RAFP mates from Calcutta India who he had last been in contact with in 1947.... A tall order, but I managed to supply him with a nominal role from Calcutta 1946 which had the UK NOK details on it. From that and searching various telephone directories, a delighted Fred called me back a week or so later to tell me that he had traced 3 of his mates and that they had arranged to me up..... Needless to say, I was over the moon as well! May Fred Rest in Peace.

The death has been announced of Malcolm George Fraser.  He served from Jan 48-Dec 49, with the rank of Cpl, and we have no next of kin details.  It is believed that he died on 02 April 1908, but we only know of his death from a solicitor's letter, in the handling of his estate.

I have just been informed of the death of Willie Bernard from stomach cancer last week.  Willie was not a member of the Association but was a long time member of the RAF Police from 1959 finishing as a Sgt at Lossiemouth.  He lived in Cooper, Fife with his wife Una.

death and advising the funeral arrangements.

FS Timbrell's wife has asked that only current and former colleagues who had
a close working relationship with him and personal friends attend the
funeral; this is because space is limited in the church.  Those wishing to
attend should speak to either Flt Lt Pascoe, OC RAFP, or Sgt Astley RAFP,
RAF Lyneham on 01249 896588 and 01249 896450 respectively.

Ruth (Alex's daughter)

Alex was an RAF Policeman through and through and will be remembered by many RAF Policemen who were taught Basic Police Training by him when he was an Instructor at RAF Police Depot Netheravon in 1958 - 1960

With regret I have to inform you of the death this morning (10 July 2004) at the age of 71yrs of Alan Forster of Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottingham.

Sadly, an article in a recent local newspaper reported the death of
Kenneth Frank ALLEN,a member of our association who died on the 28th
March 2004. He served in the RAF Police from April 69 to September
1984 raching the rank of Flight Sergeant. He was born in Cornwall but
having previously served in Lincolnshire on retirement, he resided
with his family at Branston,Lincoln.Throughout his life he was a
staunch member and supporter of the Scout Movement and a member of
the Lincoln Branch of the RAF Association. Ken Allen died following a
series of strokes at the age of 63 years and a Guard of Honour was
formed by members of the RAF Police Association and local Scouts at

Mick Cattigan died Monday 15 December 2003

Who the hell is CATTIGAN do I hear you say?

He was one half of the well known and loved CATTIGAN twins that served from the 50's making RAFP their careeer. The other half was John, died some years ago. The pair of them worked hard and played harder and became characters in the RAFP field. I had the honour to serve with them on 31 PD at Singapore. Both feature in Hennesey's  History of the RAFP and to their credit when they were repatriated as the HMTS sailed past Tiger Beer Breweries the flags were lowered in their honour.

Both progressed to WO. John on demob worked for American Embassy and Mick at Plymouth Airport , both in the Security field.

So the end of another era in the hsitory of RAFP.

I regret to write that at the EMB Meeting today we were informed of the death of one of our members;

Bill Fitzpatrick (Ex FS served 1955 to 1984) in a hospice in Newark last Monday 14 July 2003.

He lived with his wife Joan in Newark, Notts.

Following his RAF Police service Bill was with HM Customs & Excise for several years until his retirement.

Bill was a real character, a very well read Liverpudlian with a typical Scouser's sense of humour. He will be missed by all his friends and former colleagues.

It is with much regret that I pass on the sad news that Fred Jackman died yesterday 22 July 2002,  after suffering a massive stroke.  Fred was a well know and popular member of the Royal Air Force Police.  He served from 1947 to 1979 and attained the rank of Warrant Officer.  Our sincere condolence go to his wife Jean and all his family.   He will be sadly missed by all his friends.            Alf Bernstone, Chairman, Yorkshire (North) Branch.

I am shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the death of another very good friend Fred Jackman. A stalwart member of the RAF Police he was a most professional and dedicated person in his duties.  He nevertheless always showed great understanding and was ready to advise and encourage junior members. Socially an amiable and generous member of any company.   He will be sorely missed by all friends alike. I place on record my condolences to Jean and all the family    John Wood

Sadly I have just learned of the death of Gerald Frazer McMahon.DFM.RAF, an exceptional officer & a gentleman of the Provost Branch, with whom I was privilleged to serve under, in his capacity as Officer Commanding P&SS(FEAF) RAF Changi 1964-67. His death, recorded in the Daily Express Obituary column on 23rd February 2002,reports that he sadly died  on 11th September 2001and he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He will be particulary remembered in our branch as being the officer who led the RAF police investigation into the successful arrest and conviction of a senior technicion for spying. I for one was very surprised to learn from his obituary notice that he also had a very distinguished war record. As a rear gunner in Stirlings & Lancasters, he was shot down no less than four occasions, once during the D-Day Landings, when he escaped and returned with 62 German prisoners. Picture and story
